About YMEAC

The Yokohama Museum of EurAsian Cultures was founded in 2003 to present multi-faceted views of the many great cultural legacies. The Museum owns the former collection of Namio Egami (1906-2002), which comprises more than 2,500 objects of historical, archaeological, art-historical, and ethnological significance, as well as roughly 25,000 books and journals encompassing these disciplines. Professor Egami collected them over many years not only for their academic value but also out of his insatiable curiosity for the peoples of the globe and their cultures.

He donated his collection to the city of Yokohama knowing that Yokohama has both the capability and determination to provide its citizens and its visitors with opportunities to learn, to raise and encourage young scholars, and to foster intercultural exchange. Yokohama and the Eurasian continent are bridged by the fruits of his enthusiastic research and his love of humanity here at the Yokohama Museum of EurAsian Cultures.

The Museum is colorfully intercultural in the display of exhibits which are divided into the themes “Across Deserts and Grasslands,” “Color and Shape,” “Technique,” “Adornment,” and “Word and Image.” The Museum’s extensive collection celebrates the diverse cultural traditions of Eurasia, from ancient to modern, East through West.
