この画像は、約2千年前の中国、後漢時代に刻まれた石の浮彫から採られた拓本です。画面左側は猪を追う狩猟の場面、右側には熊と虎の戦いが表されています。漢代美術の特徴である生き生きとした動物の描写とともに、その時代の習慣や武器の種類まで伝え残す貴重な画像です。『春秋左氏伝』によると、古代中国で狩猟は単に獲物を捕らえる活動ではなく、四季の農閑期に行う武事の訓練であり、また、先祖の霊に捧げるいけにえを用意する祭祀の行事としても重要な意味を持っていました。

Much of our knowledge on Han life and art is derived from subterranean tomb chambers where stone slabs with engraved designs embellished the walls and ceilings. The present rubbing was taken from such a stone slab. The left half shows two men chasing a huge boar with a crossbow. In ancient China, hunting was an important part of military training, and the game was customarily presented to the offering shrine to please the ancestral spirit. The tiger and the bear were both regarded as sacred animals. The talented Han artists vividly represented the animals with a movement unique to each species.
