このように白泥で表面を白くする化粧掛けは、宋代から金、元代にかけて磁州窯でおこなわれ、器表はさまざまな植物文で彩られました。この枕面には酸化鉄を用いた顔料（鉄絵具）でチョコレート色の花や葉がのびやかに描かれています。筆の腹を押し当てながら引く筆法により、植物繊維に特有の縦の筋が巧みに表現されています。金代磁州窯の白地鉄絵牡丹文瓶にも、同じような筆使いで牡丹が描かれている例が複数知られているので、この陶枕の文様も牡丹文の一種とみなしてよいでしょう。開口部がないため、焼成時に内部の空気が膨張して破裂しないよう、側面下部に小さな孔が開いています。実用的な陶器を生産した磁州窯では陶製の枕も数多くつくられました。

White slip was first applied to the body of this pottery pillow to give it a look of white porcelain. The under-glaze plant design was brushed in iron oxide in swift and fluent strokes. The lovely chocolate-color petals and leaves are detailed with the stringy texture characteristic of plants, created by pressing the side of the brush. Cizhou-ware vessels with similar “peony” motif are in the collection of the Tokyo National Museum. Pottery pillows like this one are particularly fine examples from Cizhou kilns known for the production of daily utensils. The hole in the lower right corner was made to prevent the pillow from bursting at the time of firing.
