Each Sumerian city-state had its own deity worshiped in a temple, the central structure of the walled city. Votive statues like this one were placed in the temple so that they could constantly be offering prayers on behalf of the donors they represented. This male figure is wearing kaunakes (Greek meaning "thick cloak") characteristic of examples dating from the third early dynastic period, mid-3rd millennium BCE.
