A horizontal bar placed in the horse's mouth was one of the earliest invented horse gears. Reins are attached to the bits for a rider or driver to pull and manipulate the horse's movement. This particular bit carries horse-shaped cheek pieces with protrusions on the inside that touch the horse's cheeks.
